Let’s explore the mystery of you!

“You are simultaneously a masterpiece and a work in progress.”

I’m sure you need little convincing that you are a work in progress. In fact, you may have just uttered a musing snort.  But did your eyes quickly skim over the word “masterpiece” in order to get to the part of the quote that you are more comfortable with?  Let’s get a little uncomfortable together, and dig into the implications of being a masterpiece.

Take a moment to imagine a mountain or a prairie, stretched out in every direction.  Imagine the smell of incoming rain, a cool breeze touches your face.  Feel the deep silence of this masterpiece.  Now imagine an ocean or lake, so large that you cannot see the opposite shore.  Imagine the sounds of the waves, a gentle spray, the tickle of water between toes.  Feel the calm of this masterpiece.

Now take a closer look and see that this masterpiece has flaws.  A leaf with a caterpillar hole, a rock smoothed on one side but not the other, clouds of different sizes and shapes.  Deep inside, you know that “masterpiece” doesn’t mean perfect.  It means something bigger and more important than imperfection.  It means united.  It means whole.

Now in your imagination, take a step back and see that you are not just an observer of this masterpiece.   You are a part of it.  How can the waves tickle if your toes are absent?  How can the breeze touch if your face is not there to feel it?  You knew there was something a tiny bit off with “you are a masterpiece”.  It’s because the deep truth is more.  You are part of a masterpiece.  Masterpiece doesn’t mean complete, it means connected.

Imperfectly perfect you are part of a fully connected and whole masterpiece.

You are a work in progress not because you mess up on a daily basis.  You are work in progress because your imperfections and mess-ups are welcome here. They ripple out into this connected masterpiece.  Yes, maybe your mess-up hurt someone for a bit, or for a while.  But maybe they talked to someone who talked to someone… and that person heard a lesson in it.  Or maybe the hurt you caused changed a future bad decision for that person, saving someone else from being hurt.  You are connected into the masterpiece, so it’s also possible that someone else’s mess-up has rippled into your life and changed you for the better.

The amazing mystery of you, is that you are both a work in progress and an integral part of a masterpiece. And it wouldn’t be the same without you.

Until next time,

Laura
