There is a lesson to be found in the changing spring weather.

Maya

As busy humans we often go from one task to the next, one event to the next. Some of these tasks we have done a million times, and other events are new and challenging.  We each do different things and become unique people and build individualized lives.  And so it goes…

On Monday, I was in the middle of a task when suddenly my whole kitchen lit up.  It made me pause, look up, and shook me out of my thoughts.  I walked over and stepped into the spot where the spring sunlight was streaming in, to feel the heat on my skin.  It was a warm, lovely pause.  A cloud passed over and the moment ended.  I returned to my task, but my state of mind was subtly changed.

Our daily “doing” and self-building what yoga calls Maya.  Yes, we need our “doing”.  And yes, our different tasks in life make us all different and help us build our unique selves.  And building a unique self is important.  But yoga challenges us to see self-building as a task, like the other tasks we do.  It’s important, but it’s not the end-goal.  The end-goal is what I felt in that moment of sunlight.

But the surprise is that it’s not found at the end!  It’s found in the “in between”.  It’s found in the pauses - between our life tasks.  It’s when our mind touches upon the universe.  It’s tiny moments of realization that we are all connected.  That we are not alone.  It feels like warm relief and light and love.  That tiny stream of sunshine lightened up my mind for a few seconds.  Maybe brightened up.  It let me step away from my “doing” and pause my self-building.  It felt like a moment of warm relief.

Spring is a wonderful time to notice the in-between.  Nature gives us ups and downs in weather, so why not use these natural weather changes to pause.  Take it all in.  Just for a moment.  Take in the truth.  That we are part of a universal love/light.  We are not alone.

We return to our tasks just a little bit lighter and just a little bit brighter.

Until next time,

Laura
